A key figure from Hua Hin’s tourism sector has called for the town’s planned November 1 reopening to be postponed, due on the ongoing COVID-19 situation in the province.
Udom Srimahachota, Honorary Advisor to the Hua Hin and Cha Am chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, said the reopening of Hua Hin should be postponed to December in the interests of public health.
Mr Udom, who also owns the Baan Talay Dao Resort, said that local businesses are worried about the recent and sudden rise in infections throughout Prachuap Khiri Khan, which includes the discovery of a number of clusters in Hua Hin.
On Monday (Oct 25), health officials reported 210 new COVID-19 cases, 77 of which were discovered in Hua Hin.
Since October 13, the province has reported more than 100 new cases per day.
On Saturday (Oct 23), cases jumped to 445, making the province the fifth most infected province in Thailand.
Most of the recent cases are linked to fruit processing factories in Pranburi, as well as dormitories of migrant workers working on the construction of the dual track rail line.
However, a significant number of cases are still being discovered in Hua Hin district, which is the area due to reopen on November 1.
Earlier this month a cluster was discovered at Chatchai Market, the main fresh market located in the centre of town. The market was forced to close for a week as the number of new infections topped 100.
Last week, and before the spike in cases on October 23, health officials had described the COVID-19 situation in the province as “concerning” and urged people not to drop their guard with regards to COVID-19 preventative measures.
